Registration is opening for GLS1O – Learning Strategies 1: Skills for Success in Secondary School. This course is open to current Grade 8 students who encounter difficulty in one or more of the following areas: basic literacy or numeracy skills, organization, planning, task completion, interpersonal skills or achievement rate. This includes students who would benefit from the opportunity to reach ahead and accumulate 1 credit in order to ensure they are on track for success and/or those who may need a focussed social transition to high school.
This course will focus on the learning strategies and skills essential for students to be successful, independent learners in high school. Students will earn a high school credit, focussing on developing their transitional, study and organization skills. Teamwork, planning, and interpersonal skills will also be developed through a variety of activities. This course will help students to build confidence and motivation for their future work at high school and beyond and will include the use of computer and software programs.
The final day of the course, July 30th is a counselling day. Parents and students will be able to meet with the teacher on that day to review each student’s achievement during the course.
8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Friday from July 3rd to July 30th, 2014.
Each high school within Trillium Lakelands DSB will offer this credit provided there are sufficient registrations (20 or more students per location).
