Central Senior News

Words of Welcome from Mrs. Whiteway and Ms. Hetherington

Greetings, Central Families!

We hope that all of our students and their families have had the opportunity to enjoy the summer months; whether you have been camping, chilling at local parks, travelling, or just leaning into the down time, July and August are a great chance to regroup and reset before returning to the routines and demands of the school year.

This is the first of our community newsletters for 2023-24. We are continuing with our snazzy “yellow and black” format to reflect our school colours. You can expect to receive these via email, a few times per year. We will use this format to share news about the great things that are happening in our school, keep you up to date regarding events, and stay connected with parents about School Council initiatives happening in our school. We encourage ALL FAMILIES to visit our school website at css.tldsb.on.ca to see calendar events, holidays, and PA Days.

Some of our families are familiar with Central and some are joining us for the first time: either way, we hope that you are looking forward to returning to us on Tuesday, September 5th, which is the first day of school! Our staff are thrilled to be starting this new school year and are looking forward to a strong start to the year.

Classes and timetables: what to expect

Currently, our enrolment stands at, just over 350 students. We are a “Dual Track” school, which means that we have both French Immersion and English Stream students in our building.
We currently have:

  • 4 French Immersion Classes (2x Grade 7 and 2x Grade 8)
  • 5 Grade 8 English Stream Classes
  • 5 Grade 7 English Stream Classes

Our day is structured as follows:

8:50am-entry bell
Block 1: 9:00am-11:30am
Lunch/Recess: 11:30am-11:55am-all students eat in building;
11:55-12:30 Outdoor Recess-all students
Block 2: 12:30pm-3:00pm

Half of every school day (morning or afternoon, depending on Grade) will be spent on rotary, in which students will attend various subjects with teachers other than their homeroom teacher.

Important note:
*Homeroom teachers will reach out to families via phone/email before September 5th to inform students of their homeroom placement. Students should report to the soccer field behind the school at 8:50am on September 5th. Their teacher will be there, with a class list and a sign, ready to greet them. Staff take an “all hands on deck” approach to welcoming our students on the first day-they will be well supported in finding their teacher/classmates.

*All class placements are created in coordination with previous teachers. Central Senior is a dynamic environment, with different educators, peers, and demands each year. If there are questions or concerns about class placements, we advise that parents allow students time to adjust to their new environment, before calling to request a change. If there are extenuating circumstances, please contact the office to discuss with administration.

Equity, Accountability, and Kindness: The Central Code

At Central Senior, we are dedicated to ensuring that students feel represented, valued, and supported as members of our learning community. The Pillars of our Central Code: Equity, Accountability, and Kindness, will be shared and discussed in detail with each student. We set the bar high with respect to behaviour, and academic responsibility. Our staff are committed to supporting our students in becoming respectful and responsible members of the school, local, and global community.
