Professional Activity Day – October 6, 2023

On October 6, Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) teaching staff, educational assistants, and early childhood educators from all schools across the Board will be participating in in-person professional development, focusing on literacy and mathematics. Below is the format that will be taking place throughout the day for each group:

All elementary schools

Length: Half day

Topic: Literacy, numeracy, and mental health

Entity hosting: TLDSB

Presenter(s)/facilitator(s): School administrators, consultants, teaching and learning coaches

Description: In literacy, our educators will be learning about the new Language/Francais Curriculum and implementing it into our early reading instruction, universal design for learning, and screening to ensure educators are prepared to support their students in a manner consistent with the recommendations in the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Right to Read Report.

In numeracy, our educators will be supporting student improvement by learning about high impact instructional approaches and how they align with the curriculum. They will also be accessing a new resource and aligning it with proper assessment and our board scope and sequence.

All secondary schools

Length: Half day

Topic: Literacy across the curriculum

Entity hosting: TLDSB

Presenter(s)/facilitator(s): School administrators

Description: Teachers will engage in literacy learning with activities on how to incorporate morphology instruction when introducing subject specific vocabulary and high yield strategies to support comprehension. Teachers work with department members to implement their learning into their lesson plans.

Length: Half day

Topic: Health and safety – violence prevention

Entity hosting: TLDSB

Presenter(s)/facilitator(s): School administrators

Description: All employee groups including secretaries and custodians will engage in training that reviews the following topics:

  • Workplace violence prevention
  • Requirements for reporting workplace violent incidents, including reporting specific to TLDSB, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labour, and OSBIE
  • Site violence risk assessment
  • Domestic violence

Employees will be engaged in discussions about the topics noted above to help consolidate learning and ensure everyone understands the obligations of a safe workplace and the duty to report incidents in a timely manner.
